FAIRFIELD PUBLIC LIBRARY

HISTORY OF THE LIBRARY

In 1922, through the efforts of the Women's Club, a library was opened in the W.S. Lawrence building across from the court house.  A "Book Shower" yielded 1,500 books.  A year later, the library was presented to the city of Fairfield and the first library board was appointed.  In September, 1923 a small brick building across from the Methodist Church was purchased and the library moved the book collection.

In 1946, Mr. E.H. Childress left a gift of $10,000 to be used for library purposes.  In 1950, the library received a gift of the site of the present library building from Mrs. B.F. Thomas and Dr. and Mrs. L.W. Young.  The City of Fairfield presented a gift of $15,000 and many organizations and individuals donated to the fund.   The present building was erected in 1955.

Later, through a bequest of $10,000 by Mrs. Mim Brown of Flora, a large museum wing was added to the south of the library meeting room.

The library is funded through local taxes and by the state.  Books may be purchased for the library as a memorial, or to honor an individual.

The library is in the process of soliciting funds and planning an addition to the adult section of the library.  This addition, when completed, will included additional reference and non-fiction areas, a genealogical  section, room for additional computers and ADA restrooms.
